REI Strategy Update: Over $6,400 Saved—and Counting
Back in November 2023 and January 2024, I laid out exactly how I stack up discounts, dividends, and
deals to get top-tier outdoor gear from REI without paying full price. If you missed those posts, check them out here:So—how’s it going?
Since 2019, I’ve saved over $6,400 on REI purchases.
Yes, really. That’s not “retail math”—that’s tracked year by year with actual receipts. I’ve now purchased over 350 items while keeping my out-of-pocket cost at less than 50% of retail. Most years I average over 65% savings when you include coupon stacking, REI rewards, gift card hacks, and smart timing.
The Strategy Works
- Plan around sales. Their big anniversary sale and Labor Day deals are gold.
- Stack everything. Combine coupons, gift cards bought at a discount, and REI rewards.
- Be patient. If you don’t need it right now, wait—most gear eventually drops.
- Buy quality once. You’ll save more in the long run.
Why This Matters for Preppers
Gear isn’t just stuff—it’s capability. Whether you’re prepping for a storm, a
bug-out scenario, or just a weekend in the woods, having the right gear at the right price makes you more resilient. Overspending on one piece means you might skip another. That’s not wise. What's Next?
I’ll keep tracking. And I’ll keep sharing.
If you’ve tried the strategy, let me know! And if you haven’t, what’s stopping you? The deals are out there—but only if you know how to grab them.
