My Big Score at REI's Used Gear Sale

Remember back in late November when I wrote on how I save money at REI on my purchases?  As a fellow prepper and adventurer, I'm always on the lookout for deals on quality gear. Recently, I stumbled upon a treasure trove of savings at the REI Used Gear Sale in Overland Park, Kansas, and let me tell you, it was epic!

Picture this: crisp December air, the buzz of excited shoppers, and shelves overflowing with gently pre-loved outdoor gear. My heart beat a little faster as I navigated the aisles, knowing that hidden gems awaited.

And gems I found! Among the treasures, a pair of sturdy waterproof boots caught my eye. They fit like a dream, with just enough wear to whisper tales of past adventures, but no more than you'd expect from a weekend camping trip. The tag hinted at a minor sole separation, but a dab of trusty shoe glue (a $9 investment on Amazon) would easily fix that. Originally $165 and on sale (new) for $98.83, these beauties became mine for a mere $23! Score!

But the real story unfolds with the next item: crampons. These bad boys, retailing with REI at $199.95 new and found on Amazon for $162.53, were sitting pretty with a crossed-out $139.83 and $102.83. My pulse quickened. Then, like a fairy godmother in flannel, an REI manager swooped in and declared, "Let's make that even sweeter!" With a flourish, he crossed out the already discounted price and wrote...$19.13! My jaw hit the floor.

The icing on the cake? An additional 30% off on all used gear below the marked price at checkout! In the end, I walked out of REI with all my outdoor adventure needs fulfilled, lighter by only $31 and change. Can you believe it?

  • Embrace the power of used gear. Don't shy away from pre-loved items. With a keen eye and a little TLC, you can score amazing deals on high-quality gear.
  • Shop REI sales, especially the Used Gear Sale. These events offer incredible savings on gently used equipment, perfect for budget-conscious adventurers.

  • If you missed the "sale" check out used gear anyway.  You can check out local store's "Re/Supply" stock or check online for a broader range.
  • Consider other vendors.  REI isn't the only store to provide used gear, that's just where I had this latest experience.
