Keep your hands warm

Mittens, Gloves, or Mittens Over Gloves?

Cold-weather hand protection looks simple—until you’re trying to work outside in a Great Plains winter. Choosing between gloves, mittens, or a layered combination can mean the difference between staying functional and losing heat fast.

Gloves separate each finger, which makes them the clear winner for dexterity. If you need to drive, use tools, manage buckles, or operate a phone or radio, gloves usually come first.

  • Advantages: Best dexterity, easier tool use, better fine-motor control
  • Disadvantages: Fingers lose heat faster; less warmth in deep cold
  • Best for: Work tasks, driving, frequent on/off use

Mittens keep fingers together, allowing them to share heat. This simple design makes mittens significantly warmer than gloves at the same insulation level.

  • Advantages: Maximum warmth, better circulation retention
  • Disadvantages: Poor dexterity; awkward for tools and controls
  • Best for: Extreme cold, passive tasks, standing or walking

For preparedness and winter work, layering mittens over gloves often provides the best balance. A thin or medium glove handles dexterity, while an oversized mitten adds serious warmth when your hands are idle.

  • Advantages: Warmth when needed, dexterity when required
  • Disadvantages: Bulkier; requires planning and proper sizing
  • Best for: Outdoor work with pauses, winter travel, emergency kits

Wind and dry cold are the real enemies. Even “moderate” temperatures can strip heat quickly, especially when you’re standing still. Many experienced cold-weather folks default to gloves inside mittens—not because it’s fancy, but because it works.

  • Use gloves when you need control; switch to mittens when warmth matters more.
  • Size mittens large enough to fit comfortably over gloves.
  • Keep a glove–mitten combo in your vehicle and winter kits.
  • In wind or extreme cold, assume mittens (or layering) will be necessary.

Bottom line: gloves give you control, mittens give you warmth, and mittens over gloves give you options. In Great Plains winters, flexibility often matters more than choosing just one.
